Education in Spain for Expat Families

Understanding the Spanish education system and the options for your children.

Structure of the Spanish Education System

The education system in Spain is managed by both the central government and the Autonomous Communities. Education is **compulsory and free from ages 6 to 16**.

Infant Education (0-6 years)

Not compulsory. Divided into two cycles: the first cycle (0-3 years, nurseries) and the second cycle (3-6 years, preschool in schools). The second cycle is free in public and state-subsidized centers.

Primary Education (6-12 years)

Compulsory and free. It consists of six academic years and focuses on basic skills, language, mathematics, environmental studies, and arts.

Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) (12-16 years)

Compulsory and free. It consists of four years. Upon completion, students earn a diploma that allows access to Bachillerato or vocational training.

Bachillerato & Vocational Training (Post-compulsory)

Bachillerato (2 years) prepares students for university. Vocational Training (FP) offers technical qualifications for the job market, with intermediate and higher levels.

Types of Schools in Spain

There are different options for schooling your children, each with its own characteristics.

Public Schools (Colegios Públicos)

These are state-funded and free (except for materials, meals, etc.). The language of instruction is Spanish and/or the co-official language of the region (e.g., Catalan, Basque). Placement depends on your area of residence.

State-Subsidized Schools (Colegios Concertados)

These are privately owned but receive state funding. They follow the Spanish curriculum. They may request a "voluntary" monthly fee and often have a religious orientation. The admission process is similar to public schools.

Private & International Schools

These are not state-funded and set their own fees. They may follow the Spanish curriculum or a foreign curriculum (e.g., British, American, French, IB). They are a popular choice for expat families seeking continuity in education.

Enrollment Process

Key aspects to consider when enrolling your children:

  1. Admissions Calendar: Typically opens in spring (March-May) for the school year starting in September. It's crucial to be aware of the dates in your Autonomous Community.
  2. Required Documentation: You'll generally need the 'empadronamiento' certificate, family book or birth certificate, ID/passport of parents and child, and vaccination records.
  3. Credit Transfer (Homologación): If your child is joining from a foreign education system, it may be necessary to have their previous studies officially recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education.
