What is an NIE and Why Do You Need It?

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a unique, personal identification number assigned to foreigners for tax and administrative purposes in Spain. It is essential for a wide range of procedures, for both residents and non-residents with economic, professional, or social interests in the country.

You will need an NIE for common situations such as:

Buying or selling property.
Opening a bank account.
Signing an employment contract or registering as self-employed.
Buying a vehicle.
Filing and paying taxes.
Contracting utilities (water, electricity, internet).
Accessing public services.

Important: The NIE itself does not grant the right to reside in Spain, nor is it a residence or work permit. It is simply an identification number.

How and Where to Apply for the NIE?

The NIE can be requested in two main ways:

From Abroad

Through the Spanish Consular Office in your country of residence. You will need to submit the required documentation and justify the reasons for your application.

In Spain

Directly at Foreigners' Offices (Oficinas de Extranjería) or designated Police Stations. This requires legal entry into Spain and usually a prior appointment (cita previa).

General Required Documentation

While requirements can vary slightly, the essential documents are:

Official application form (Modelo EX-15), duly completed and signed.
Original and a full copy of your valid passport, or a valid ID card for EU citizens.
Communication of the reasons justifying the request. This is a key point and must be well-documented (e.g., a property deposit contract, a job offer, etc.).
Proof of payment of the corresponding fee (Form 790 Code 012).
If applying through a representative, a notarized power of attorney is required.

Always check the specific requirements of the Consulate or Foreigners' Office where you will submit your application.

Process and Tips

Get an Appointment (Cita Previa): Almost always mandatory if applying in Spain and can be the most challenging step due to high demand.
Prepare Documents: Ensure everything is correct, complete, and translated if necessary.
Pay the Fee: This must be done at a bank before your appointment.
Submission and Resolution: Once submitted, the number is usually assigned within a few days. Your NIE number is permanent.
